One way a gentleman lives his life that makes him different from an ordinary man is that he fills his life with luxury.

Contrary to what you might think, luxury does not require great sums of money.

Luxury is a state of mind.

So in today’s article, I’m going to share with you five simple ways you can add more luxury to your life.

I - Upgrade your loungewear

Most of us spend at least half of our time at home.

For the tens of millions of us who work from home, that time is significantly more.

Therefore, what we wear when we are at home has a significant impact on how we feel.

Sadly, the act of being at home and working from home is used by many as a reason to look their worst.

Many people wear old clothes at home, baggy clothes, and worn clothes.

Or they wear sweatpants, basketball shorts, and hoodies that don’t make them feel good, but just feel comfortable.

To add more luxury into your life, invest in clothes to wear at home that are both elegant and comfortable.

I love wearing these pajamas from Brooks Brothers.

There are pajamas and then there are pajamas. This set from Brooks Brothers ($86) is the latter.

They are constructed from 100% seersucker cotton look straight off the set of Mad Men.

Because they are made from natural fabrics, they feel very comfortable, soft, and cooling.

Normally, I would not feel productive wearing pajamas in the daytime, but with these pajamas, the effect is totally different.

They make me feel like Hugh Hefner as I sit down to do my work.

Your luxurious home outfits might be rather different.

If you have to take a lot of video calls for your work-from-home job, you might instead wear a polo shirt or a linen shirt with a pair of easy trousers.

Easy trousers have a drawstring waistband so they have the comfort of sweatpants, but they are normally made of high quality, natural fabrics and look much more polished.

II - Give yourself the gift of time alone

Being luxurious does not require money, rather, luxury is a state of mind.

Well, my next suggestion to add a bit of luxury to your life is 100% free.

Gentleman, it is time to give yourself the gift of quality time alone.

To explain what I mean, let me tell you how I do this in my life, every day.

In the morning, I sit at my desk and I write my articles.

Then around 10am, I give myself a simple gift. I make my coffee, and I take the elevator down to the patio.

I sit outside and sip my coffee while watching the boats on the river and the people walking by for about ten minutes. It’s very important here that i don’t go on my phone, because then I would be giving my time to other people.

Luxury can be as simple as a cup of coffee in solitude

Instead, I’m giving this time to myself by just existing with my own thoughts and relaxing.

It’s a form of mindfulness or meditation without trying.

Doing this every day puts me in a calm, positive mood and to me, that is the ultimate form of luxury.

What this looks like for you may be different, but I encourage you to choose a very simple activity that gets you away from your phone and from distractions.

It might mean reading a book in the park on your lunch break, playing a board game with your girlfriend instead of watching TV, or a more structured meditation practice.

Mindfulness and calm is a luxury in today’s era, but it’s a gift you can give to yourself for free.

III - Stimulate the senses

To live a luxurious life you need to stimulate the senses, and one of the easiest ways to inspire yourself and create a feeling of luxury is with a luxurious fragrance.

I believe in wearing fragrance every day, even just at home, because I can smell it on myself and it makes me feel more sophisticated.

Personally, I like to sample new fragrances all the time, and that’s why I use the fragrance subscription service Scentbird.

IV - Shake it up

Another way I like to add luxury to my life is by making a cocktail at home.

Whether you drink a margarita or a Manhattan, it’s hard not to feel luxurious when you have a great drink in your hand.

But obviously, you don’t want to spend every night at a bar, and that would be a very effective way to drink away your bank balance.

On the other hand, making a cocktail at home can be just as luxurious if not more than having one at a bar, and it costs just a fraction of the price.

I keep a good selection of spirits, liqueurs, and garnishes at home so I can always make what I’m in the mood for.

Here, you’ll see I’m sipping on an old fashioned.

But it’s not just the taste of the drink or the feeling of holding the cocktail that makes this a luxurious experience, it’s also the ritual of making the drink.

For me, a cocktail is like the period that marks the end of the day, and tells my mind to relax. I also enjoy learning about new cocktails and take pride in making them the best I can.

I never have more than one or two because it really isn’t the alcohol that makes the cocktail special.

In fact, if you don’t drink, I encourage you to adopt a similar attitude and ritual around your favorite drink.

Maybe you upgrade your morning coffee to a freshly ground espresso, served in an elegant cup and saucer, or, you simply drink your water with ice and lemon, and serve it in a nicer glass.

It’s these small details in your life that contribute to an overall feeling of luxury.

V - Soundtrack your life

The final suggestion I have for you to live a more luxurious life is to use background music in your home.

Think about it, there’s a reason why the best bars and restaurants have carefully-curated playlists.

It’s because they understand that music can create a powerful sense of ambiance.

In your home, you can do just the same thing.

As anyone who has ever lived with me or spent a lot of time at my place can attest, I almost always have some soft, background jazz going.

I mostly use the Spotify playlists, Evening Jazz or Late Night Jazz, but I also have my own playlist of music you may have heard on my YouTube channel.

Obviously, I also listen to more engaging styles of music, but for my day-to-day existence, nothing makes me feel more relaxed and luxurious than the soft tinkling of a cold piano or gentle murmurings of a saxophone.

Gentlemen, it’s time to hear from you in the comments. What are some simple things you do to create a life of luxury? or are you in need of more luxury in your life?
