A Community for Modern Gentlemen
It’s coming up to one year since I began the YouTube channel Gent Z and I’m not going to give you any false modesty, I am incredibly proud of what I have here.
But what I am most proud of, in particular, is not the number of subscribers. it’s not the views. It’s the community of people that this channel has created.
The caliber of intelligent, respectful gentlemen of all ages who watch this channel and interact here is unmatched by almost any other online space.
I am proud of the way we speak to each other in the comments, the way we tackle such a broad scope of topics, and the real life community we have built through our meet-up events.
And it’s these real life events that have been the most unexpected yet rewarding aspect of this labor of love I call Gent Z.
What I get to do at these events is bring together like-minded men who have so much in common but who never would have met each other any other way.
It’s a magical experience and everyone who attends finds it to be an incredibly fun and enriching event.
My idea behind these nights was to simply make the types of events that I would want to go myself, and I knew that there must be other guys out there who felt the same way.
We’re now going international with a London meet-up next month, and I’m planning events in Dallas and possibly New York before the end of the year.
But these real-life events are always going to have their limitations - the locations, the capacity, the age required to get into a bar - so I’ve been thinking for a while about what I could do to bring the magic of these events to the online space.
And I decided that the best way to do that would be with a private community.
I love the community we have on YouTube but there are many limitations to the platform
I’ve been speaking with some of you in the YouTube comments for literally months now, but I don’t really know who you are, and YouTube doesn’t have the capacity for those connections.
So the primary aim of the community is to break down the barrier between you and me.
What the community offers
Now I’ve told you the reason why I created the community, let me tell you what is inside the community and what you will experience if you decide to join.
The primary function of the community is communication, and the main ways we do this is with discussion forums, private chats, and twice weekly video calls.
I post once or twice a day in the forums to get the conversations started and you are also welcome to make posts yourself.
You can share an outfit, post something inspirational, or simply tell us what’s going on with your life.
It’s totally open, as long as the posts are high quality and contribute something to the group.
The second aspect to the communication is the private chat.
In the community, my DMs are very much open and we can chat anytime about whatever you want.
I get a lot of DMs on Instagram and a lot of emails, and as much as I would love to respond to them all, it just isn’t logistically possible.
But I will put messages from people in the community as a priority.
The third communication aspect to the community is my favorite and that’s our cocktail hour!
I hold these twice a week, one during a time that works for people in the US, and one that’s suited to gentlemen over in Europe.
We had our first call the other week and it really was like sitting at a bar with some of the most interesting guys in town.
We have gentlemen from all over the country, all over the world, from ages 20 up to 40 and 50 and older - and it’s great to share our perspectives in a very informal way.
It could be like a Q&A but so far it’s more of an unstructured format, and an open discussion.
Last week, we talked about the differences between the styles in Chicago compared to Texas and South Carolina, we spoke about dating, Jordan Peterson, and James Bond.
If you enjoy interacting with one of your fellow gentlemen in the community, I’ve made it so that you can directly message each other and make friends.
The whole aim of this is to connect guys who are this rare breed of gentlemen, and hopefully, even create some real life friendships.
For example, you might think you’re the only guy in your rural county in Montana who is into the same things as you, until you log in to the community one day and see that there’s in guy there who lives just one town over.
So that’s the communication side of things but there is a lot, lot more to the community than that.
For those of you who like my videos, there are a bunch of exclusive videos in the community that are of a more structured, course-type format.
I have written an approximately 60,000 word course on everything it means to be a gentleman, from style to etiquette to mental health to dating, and I am in the process of recording this course in video format, creating the slides, and uploading it exclusively to the community.
So if you like my videos and you would appreciate a structured learning approach, then you will find it there.
So far, I’ve noticed we have more of a self-improvement and philosophy slant to the community, and those of you who are into that will definitely find a home in the Gent Z book club.
Once a month, we pick a book to read and study independently, then come together and share our thoughts and learnings.
There is still time to nominate this month’s book if you choose to join the community too.
And finally, there is a leaderboard in the community which rewards you for posting content and interacting with others.
The member who is at the top of the leaderboard each month can win a prize which will be something like a new pair of shoes, a skincare set, or a free, hour-long 1-1 call with me.
As you’ll see, the community is hosted on this platform called Skool. It’s a pretty new platform that a few other content creators have used to create their communities.
Before I created my community, I joined a bunch of other ones across Skool, Patreon, Circle, and Kajabi to see which was best for the members.
The reason I chose Skool was just because of the user experience. It really is the easiest and most fun to use, especially if you download the Skool app.
Now let me talk about the price. I’ll be honest with you, I had initially thought to price this community much higher than I did, and there are equivalent communities on Skool that cost nearly $200 a month to join.
But I want this community to have impact, and to have impact it has to be accessible to young men all over the world.
So the price is literally less than a Netflix subscription, it’s $12 a month.
And because I mean what I say about being accessible and having an impact, if you’re in school and you don’t have your own money but you want to join, you can email me, tell me about yourself, and I’ll grant you free access to the group.
On the other hand, those of you who like what I do here and on YouTube but aren’t necessarily looking to interact in a community, you can also join as a way to support the channel.
But I’m sure, if you do decide to join, you will see the value in it and you’ll be excited to participate and get involved.
So, gentlemen, please do join us today.
I’ll be there to personally welcome you to the community with a DM, and I look forward to seeing you on our cocktail hour video calls where I can get to know you better. Cheers!
